The final OpenAdventure race of the year was held in the Lakes yesterday, 6th December. Five hours of running and biking, Open5 race started in Staveley in the east Lakes, down the bottom of the Kentmere valley.
There was loads of snow and ice on the ground making for slippy going. I opted to run first on the basis that it would be faster underfoot than underwheel. There were a few checkpoints on the open fell and all the snow combined with heavy fog to make for tricky navigation conditions. I made a really bad nav error and lost about 50 minutes - at one point losing enthusiasm completely and phoning Chez Frost to see if she had been successful getting us an entry into the awesome mountain bike stage race - the Transalp (online entry opened yesterday at noon and it fills up in about 10 minutes). Chez told me to pull my finger out and get going which I duly did.
I didn't make any more nav errors (well major ones anyway!). I had a nice run around without a bike and then had a run around with a bike as all the powdery snow made it really hard to stay upright when trying to pedal. It was a great fun event, nice to race in different and challenging conditions. It was also great to catch up with loads of mates and eat loads of Wilf's cakes :o)
The next Open5 is in North Yorkshire at the beginning of February. They are always fun, well planned and managed events and the event will be a great way to blow a few wintry cobwebs.
Me and Chez got an entry into Transalp!!!
