Tuesday 10th February 2009A long time ago a wise man once said to me (ok it was John Houlihan two weeks ago) "Heather always listen to Mr Compass".
I remembered that yesterday as I was running in a Slovenian forest nearing dark. Lost. I had a map but no Mr C. No language, mobile phone or money either. There were loads of additional tracks in the forest that were not on the map and were rather confusing. After a while trying to work out where I was I realised I had run around in one big circle. It was then I wished I had packed my trusty thumb compass in my pocket. How many times have I wished that? Furthermore how many times have I had it with me, not used it and ended up lost? Even when I use it I sometimes do not believe it and end up going awry - the last time being at previous Open5 when, running down from a snowy fell in the clag I veered off to the left, got lost and ended up taking an hour and twenty minutes to get to the next checkpoint, a leg that should have taken me at most twenty minutes! I am digressing a bit. I obviously got out of the forest as I am typing this - it did take me a while though. After that little excursion I have resolved once again to both carry Mr Compass and use it when I need it! Slovenia is great I will report on the x-country skiing in the next few days. Cheers,Heather|
