Friday 12th November 2004La RUTA traverses Costa Rica from coast to coast in three days. The race format is one of three point to point to point races. At the end, the times are added and the winner is the rider with the least amount of time. Each day there are, at least, five control/aid stations, which riders have to pass through with an allotted time limit. In these aid stations you will find water, electrolyte drinks, tropical fruits, such as bananas, pineapples, watermelons, and papayas. Two stations usually have carbohydrates like breads, cookies, tuna sandwiches, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
Riders must do all repairs and carry everything that will be needed during the race, such as tools, rain jacket, etc. Even if a racer does not make the time limits, the racer is allowed to ride the next day but, will not be considered as an official finisher. Riders are not allowed to bike past dark. After 6 p.m., any rider on the route will be picked up by our staff and taken to the finish line. The categories are male by ages and female.
The spirit of LA RUTA DE LOS CONQUISTADORES.
LA RUTA DE LOS CONQUISTADORES is considered by many as one of the hardest athletic events on the globe. LA RUTA more than being a race is a personal growth experience, a personal challenge. More important than beating a competitor and fighting over a few minutes or seconds, the race is about the journey ... about learning about yourself, about making friends being helped and helping others along the way. I never meant the race to be a cut throat competitive race that type-A personalities use as a way to prove to others they are superior. To enjoy LA RUTA you have to be flexible in many ways, due to the ever-changing natural settings it goes through, many times the route changes even while the race is going on. Patience is definitely a great quality to have if you don’t want to be fighting your own frustration. Finally, the persons that enjoy the event most focus on the great things the event brings to them and try to forget the moments of frustration. LA RUTA is not for everyone only for those tough enough to see beauty in physical and mental challenges and can still laugh in the face of adversity. Not for possers, but for doers. Hope you have a great race and enjoy our country!
