At Cliffhanger the other weekend, some people watching the Dyno comp were saying that the extreme dynos being performed were not really an feat of climbing, more a feat of gymnastics. Do you agree?

There are gymnastic similarities in many aspects of climbing. Anyone watching the British Lead Climbing Championship would see similar qualities in the girls of balance, agility, flexibility, timing, strength and stamina as in the Beam, for example. A slightly different approach from the lads has more emphasis on strength and stamina, more like the rings. I guess a dyno comp tests some aspects more than others, but if some like to compete and others like to spectate, then why not. It all adds to an increasingly varied sport.

I'm not saying that climbing as whole is not a gymnastic activity in any way. Its just that the whole 'single dyno as big as possible' thing is such a focussed activity that it is maybe as related to say gymnastics or even athletics as climbing. Climbing needs a whole suite of skills, say like football, with a dyno comp being a bit like a 'kick a ball as far as you can' competition or keepie-uppies.

We should settle this by getting some gymnasts into the dyno comp and see how they fair.

I found skin was my limiting factor, my hands were bleeding by the time I got to 2m
