Friday 31st July 2009In an ongoing attempt to ski the slopes of some of the biggest mountains in the world, Swedish skier and mountaineer, Fredrik Ericsson's latest K2 expedition has met with disaster.
Ericsson's ski-partner Michele Fait, fell hundred's of metres to his death while descending the slopes of the mountain, the exact position of the team when the accident happened is still unclear. But it is known that they had previously ascended via the Cesen Route for acclimatisation purposes and returned to base camp the day after.
Ericsson has a string of succesful high-altitude ski descents behind him including, skiing from the central summit of Shisha Pangma (8012m), Laila Peak from an altitude of 6069m, Gasherbrum 2 (8035m) and Dhaulagiri where he made a 3000 metre descent from 8000m.
In his blog Ericsson states that Michele 'was sliding and tumbling for several hundred meters' and that upon discovering the body 'he wasnt breathing and had no pulse.'
Ericsson has since returned home and his thoughts go out to the family of Michele.
