OMM 2011 - Breadalbane

Report by Dave MacFarlane
Wednesday 2nd November 2011

The 2011 Original Mountain Marathon, now the 43rd in the history of the event, was this year held at the WWII Prisoner of War camp Cultybraggan outside Comrie in southern Scotland, west of Perth. The camp was regarded as one of the most high profile PoW sites of the era, housing some of the most dangerous threats to the allied forces.

Now owned by the people of Comrie, the site has plans to become an historical monument and was a perfect base for the 2011 OMM, Nissen huts housed the event registration, refreshments, bar and planetFear shop, a welcome shelter from the rain over the weekend that would test competitor's full abilities.

Nestled between Loch Tay to the north west and Loch Earn to the south, Breadalbane promised rugged terrain with few paths and a Monroe to boot. After completing the course competitors talked of some of the best landscape they had encountered in an OMM yet. Saturday started clasically with low cloud and heavy rain and racer's were wearing full weather protection from the very start.

Day 1 was a true test of ability and fitness, a number of teams were to drop out of the race for a variety of reasons, some were too cold having not been able to move fast enough over the rugged terrain and some retired due to injuries incurred on the mountain, ankles were particularly vulnerable. The ground was predominantly wet and soft with the usual array of tussocks and shin busting heather.

Throughout the day the rain persisted and the low cloud meant that all the peaks and mountains on-course were covered, competitors found themselves navigating from compass bearings for almost the entirety of the day. Those who weren't as polished in such techniques quickly found themselves off course and becoming lost.

Overnight camp this year was split in two, with the short and medium score courses finding their overnight refuge at the head of Loch Lednock reservoir, whilst the other courses were positioned in Glen Almond, a considerable distance from the nearest good road.

After the first day's racing the Elite course was a frenzy for first place, Steve Birkinshaw and Jethro Lennox were favourites for top spot, however after having mis-punched their tenth checkpoint they incurred a thirty minute penalty a point that met with some opposition as there were claims that the checkpoints were too close and too similarly labelled with the same control description. Tim Higginbottom and Chris Near finished day 1 in first with a time of 6hrs 01min 38secs.

Going in to day 2 Higginbottom and Near were looking set for first place however it was planetFear founder Shane Ohly and race partner Duncan Archer who from third place on Saturday had pulled it out of the bag on Sunday. Improved conditions with a higher cloud level and less rain meant that navigation was slightly more straightforward and Higginbottom and Near found themselves chasing Ohly and Archer from the chasing start.

The final 300 metres found Ohly and Archer ahead of the pack meaning they had a first place position more or less bagged, tiredness from the two days of racing found them walking the last stretch of the course, only for them to glance over their shoulder to find Higginbottom and Near gaining ground and a sprint for the finish ensued.

Ohly and Archer finished only 13 seconds ahead of second placed Higginbottom and Near. After two marathons in two days and harsh conditions this was a phenomenal effort by both teams and encapsulated the spirit of the event perfectly, hard racing all the way to the bitter end.

omm thoughts - 04/11/2011
Fantastic event, as a first timer impressed with organisation and volunteer support, especially those that were sat out in the hills at the checkpoints. One fly in ointment was crazy queues in shop Friday evening when we wanted to pay by cash and get some tea, it took over an hour to buy a packet meeal, definitely room for improvement there.
Nice work Dave! - 04/11/2011
Great pics and video.

Sorry to all regarding the wait in the OMM-planetFear shop, we were experiencing a technical issue with card machines due to the suppliers sending us the wrong type of machine. Extremely frustrating for us too. We won't be using them again. Great time had by all the pF staff though :)
