Monday 10th September 2012On Friday, at Carreg Cennen Castle, the 2nd running of the epic Dragon’s Back race drew to a close.
Steve Birkinshaw took the win of the five day event but the biggest finishing plaudits went to Wendy Dodds, the last runner on the course, the oldest competitor in the race and one of only three runners who’ve completed both editions of the race.
A total of 29 runners completed the course which, unusual for an event in Wales, was run largely under scorching skies. Dehydration and heat fatigue were issues for all runners but it was as if the gods were taunting the runners making them endure boggy conditions underfoot.
As to when the next Dragon’s Back will be, organiser Shane Ohly was a little cagey. “There will be another race, I’m just not sure when. I’ll have to go away and have a think about that.”
Hopefully we won’t have to wait twenty years this time though.
