Friday 3rd September 2010From Friday 03 to Sunday 05 September 2010 up to 1,000 of the World's best elite and age group duathletes will descend on Edinburgh's Holyrood Park for the 2010 GE Edinburgh ITU Duathlon World Championships. They will compete for six World Championship titles, twenty-seven age group gold medals and a total prize fund of 75,000 Euros.
The 2010 GE Edinburgh ITU Duathlon World Championships is the most prestigious duathlon competition ever to be staged in the UK and offers the perfect opportunity for Edinburgh residents, visitors to the city and running, cycling and multisport enthusiasts to watch the best duathletes in the world demonstrate their incredible levels of endurance and tactical ability.
The elite, U23 and age group athletes will compete over a standard international duathlon course - 10km run followed by a 40km cycle and a 5km run, all completed as a continuous activity. Edinburgh's course, consisting of multiple laps around Holyrood Park and Arthur's Seat (six times in total by foot, and a further seven times on the bike), will be one of the most challenging ever used on the international circuit.
British elite and under-23 duathletes have an impressive record in major competitions, boasting many medalists at both World and European Championships in recent years. Leading the very strong field in 2010 will be Catriona Morrison, from Broxburn near Edinburgh, in her bid to become World Champion for the second time. She will be joined by some incredibly talented GE Great Britain Team athletes including 2010 European medalist Katie Ingram and two-time World Junior Duathlon champion Sophie Coleman and former European Under 23 triathlon champion Ritchie Nicholls (another top Scottish athlete).
As well as watching (for free!) and cheering on the World's best, Dare2Tri and Trisport UK have teamed up to offer free duathlon taster sessions (bikes and safety equipment supplied) for the kids in the event village all weekend. On Sunday families, dressed in huge Sumo suits, can take to the ring for a bit of Sumo Wrestling or have a go at a fun rowing challenge, both under the watchful eye of Edinburgh Leisure.
In September the 2010 GE Edinburgh ITU Duathlon World Championships will join two other major international sporting events - the IFSC World Youth Championships for Climbing and the (FITA) Archery World Cup Final - In Edinburgh's Super September of sport - and will welcome thousands of competitors and spectators to the city.
