The Oryx from Montane

Montane's Oryx Jacket conveniently arrived with the planetFear review team as the first autumn gales started to sweep Britain. Clearly, Montane timed its arrival with the same precision with which they've designed and constructed this superlative active fleece.

After using the Oryx over the past two months for climbing, mountain biking, running - and occasionally in the office when the heating packed up (!) - our unanimous verdict is that it is among the best ultralight mid-layer products currently available. For an overview of the basic properties and functions of the Oryx, Montane provide this refreshingly straightforward synopsis in their catalogue:

"Using POLARTEC® Power Dry® the Oryx Jacket has the twin performance properties of being both very high wicking for active use in the spring and summer; and also highly thermally efficient for the colder autumn and winter months. With DRYACTIV® Express fabric for extra high wicking stretch performance under the arms, the Oryx is incredibly comfortable for all-day, all-season use."

The point is simple: this neat garment is just as good as a warm base-layer for cooler days in spring and summer, as it is as a light and efficient mid-layer for ice climbing, skiing or winter riding and running. Montane have finished off the Oryx with a stylish, athletic cut which allows complete freedom of movement, and a no-nonsense choice of two strong colours: black or red.

At the UK RRP of £55.00, this has to be one of the best value products in its class.
